“AI visibility” sounds like a big corporate term, but it rests on a very simple idea: when people decide, they no longer ask a search engine, they ask an AI directly. Does your name appear in the answer or not — that's the whole point.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility describes how often and in what way a brand appears in the answers given by generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews. Think of it as the AI-world counterpart of “ranking” in classic SEO — except there is no rank number: you either appear or you don't, or you appear but are described wrongly or incompletely.
Why does it matter now?
Google adding AI-generated summaries to its own search results means that some users get the answer and move on without clicking through to any site. This effect is stronger for informational queries. So it's not just “enthusiasts who use ChatGPT”: an ordinary prospect who uses Google every day now also gets the answers to some questions from an AI summary.
How do you measure it yourself? (free method)
- Draw up a list of questions: Write 10–15 natural questions your customer might ask when looking for you. (Such as “who offers automation consulting in Istanbul”, “who can I ask about setting up n8n”.)
- Ask the same questions in three places: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini. Take notes separately: where you appeared, where you didn't, and how you were described if you did.
- Put it in a table: question, platform, did you appear, is the description correct, whose site is cited as the source. A simple Google Sheet is enough; repeat once a month.
- Test your competitors with the same questions: If they appear and you don't, look at which of their pages or content are different.
Signals that increase visibility
- Consistent entity definition: Describing your business with the same sentences everywhere on your site makes it easier for the model to recognize your brand as “one thing”.
- Schema.org markup: Structured data such as Organization, Service and FAQPage makes information machine-readable.
- Third-party mentions: Having your name appear not only on your own site but on other trustworthy sites helps the model see you as a “verified” source.
- Content that answers directly: Posts that ask the question and immediately give a clear answer are quoted more easily than general posts with a long introduction.
FAQ
Is AI visibility the same as SEO ranking?
No. SEO ranking measures your position on Google's search results page. AI visibility measures whether your brand name appears in the answer a language model produces when asked a question. The two are separate but feed each other.
Do you need a paid tool to measure this?
No, not at the start for a small business. Asking the 10–15 questions you've defined to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini once a month and noting the results in a table is a sufficient start.
What should I do if my brand doesn't appear at all?
First make sure your site has a clear, consistent service description; then add schema.org markup and, if possible, increase content on third-party sites that mentions your name. The model trusts information that is repeated consistently more than information from a single source.
